I have all posts from Google Groups filtered out, have killed various
bickering threads by pressing the "K" button (I use Thunderbird) and
have killfiled several of the major trouble-makers.
And yet, I still have to waste a tons of time wading through the clutter
and debris of messages posted to this group from people who seem to have
nothing better to do than to post anonymous garbage and trolling which
has nothing to do with FREEWARE.
PLEASE, grow up and stop cluttering this group.
I, and many other people are here to discuss freeware, not who did what
to whom and so on.
YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE! JUST GROW UP or please find someplace else to
waste time and space.
Now that's about all I have to say on this subject. I will NOT respond
to any replies to this post.

I think it may be hopeless as I see even some of the folks that provide
good info get into flame wars. Very Sad and ruins the group.
I have been handling the problem by simply not opening anything that
does not appear directly on topic.

It wouldn't be so bad if everyone who wanted to discuss/argue points not
related to freeware, just tagged the subject as [OT] so people could
filter out unwanted topics.

But, MH, they don't seem inclined to change, so my solution is
essentially the same as John's. I've killfiled various people and topics
(for example, anything involving clothing and wristwatches). I decided
to kill gmail. If I miss any good posts, well, it's still worthwhile
because the good will still outweigh all the time-wasting bad crap. It
makes this NG much more usable for me.

Such is the nature of unmoderated newsgroups. I have learned to change
my expectations of others and not be controlled by their childishness.
At the moment I am viewing them as a good example of a bad example.
Occassionally I get a chuckle from their outrageous statements.
Since your filters aren't so reliable anymore perhaps you would
consider using the one I find quite good. It's called the "mouse
scroll wheel". |

Since you're using Thunderbird, you may like to check out NewsProxy.
It's like putting TB on steroids in as far as filtering is concerned.

Everybody to their own. I also found that killfiling you
Mr Steinfeld made this NG more usable.
That was after you made several abusive posts a while back.
Now we see you taking the self-righteous moral high ground.

Like this posting... Agent's filter capabilities need some work, but the
thing I like most (nest to "ignore (sub)thread") is that you can put a
time limit on those filters.

Don't bother to react; I'm going to click on OK after this and since my
view is set to hide ignored postings I'm following Nike's credo:don't
talk about it, _Just do it!_

But killing Gmailers is like throwing out the baby with the bathwater,
because many people use a Gmail addy who are not posting from Google
Groups. Google Groups is where all the spam comes from, and I read
somewhere that they have a new process to control the spam. |

I've lost count of how many times that's been pointed out to the above
poster. I personally gave up after my third attempt to explain didn't
do it. Nice guy, really, but for some reason it's just hard to
convince him that the email domain in the From: address seldom
indicates the news server used.
