AVAST is decidedly my long-time best preference.
I particularly like the audio notifications of updates.
ANTIVIR may be nearly as effective, but annoying with
its continual nag screen wanting you to upgrade.
AVG seems to have ever-recurring difficulties allowing
users to download updates. Sometimes it takes days to
get onto their servers.

You are not redistributing it. You are making a modification on your own |
computer. People do so all the time legally and ethically.

I blocked "avnotify.exe" with my firewall.
I wouldn't compare my firewall with a crack.
;-)
For me Avira Antivir is no nagware.
But there are people with a different opinion.

Ron laid this down on his screen :

AntiVir brought my computer to a crawl for some reason.

+ 1 Avira AntiVir for me, have installed on over 100 comps, disabled
the nag sgreen.
Prefer Avira AntiVir only for the reason that I never found a way to
disable the Avast nag screen to reregister after 12 months. |

I'm guessing that the "nag screen"/adware is what brought my computer
to a crawl.
I also had a AntiVir icon in my control panel for some reason. |

Have you tried a "Safe" uninstall using Revo Uninstaller, then
downloading and installing a fresh copy? I'd like to find a solution
to this problem, too.

Was'nt for my benefit Larry, I wanted something that required no
intervention from the 100+ computers I installed Avira AntiVir on. |

Right. If you or anyone else finds a simple solution, I'd be
interested to hear of it.

Normal meaning what?
I've never had an icon in my control panel from any AV program that
I've ever used except for AntiVir.
And, AntiVir is the only AV program to bring my computer to a crawl. |

Most common cause > "AV program to bring my computer to a crawl" is having
the email check enabled.

AntiVir doesn't have a email scanner. |

I'm talking about scanning incoming/outgoing email.
What good is scanning email if you already have it?
AntiVir, doesn't have an incoming/outgoing email scanner, and it
slowed my computer to a crawl.

And the same just happened to me with Avast. It was taking an incredibly
long time for the on-demand scan (1+ days) so I gave up. I also noticed
Avast used around 50mb of memory when running, as opposed to AntiVir's
11 or so.
Removed Avast, popped AntiVir back on and it is as quick as. I also see
there is a way to perform the same action on any consecutive nasties
found, so no need for a fully interactive scan. The only downsides are
that their update server goes belly up sometimes and the updates are not
exactly small in size. I'll just have to live with it.
I don't think there is a "best AV programme". I think you need to try
and test as many as you can and go with the one that plays the nicest
with the other things on your system. There are just way too many
variables.
Dare I mention the word "subjective"? ;-) |
